A 19th-century illustration of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

Contrary to popular belief, Abraham Lincoln‘s son Robert didn’t literally witness three presidential assassinations. He was, however, at his father’s side when he died; and he was also at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station when President James Garfield was shot in 1881. Twenty years later, he visited the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, and found out that President William McKinley had just been shot there.

And that’s not even the weirdest historical coincidence involving Robert Lincoln. On this episode of The List Show, Mental Floss host Justin Dodd is sharing that story and 10 other uncanny chance happenings from history, from William Shakespeare’s strange connection to the King James Bible to Violet Jessop’s accidental habit of voyaging on sinking ships.
